Mentalization-Based Therapy is an integrative approach that draws elements from psychodynamic, cognitive behavioural, systemic and social-ecological therapies. Mentalization is the ability to reflect upon and understand one’s feelings and behaviours. It is essential for an effective emotional regulation and satisfying relationships.
How does Mentalization work?
The ability of mentalizing is developed in the relationship with our caregivers as small children. In a secure attachment relationship, the attuned caregiver helps the baby making sense of her/his own feelings, mental states and needs.
When a person did not experience secure attachment, MBT helps developing mentalization skills.
